What have we done?
We have done much to the marshes. By the early 1970's, over half of the marshes had been destroyed in order to make room for homes and agricultural industries. We also have artificially flooded the area using structures called "dikes". These are walls that can prevent flooding, but since the water was on the side of the marshes, the water rose, flooding the area.
What can we do?
-We can stop the flooding, by draining out the water
-By replanting trees, we can begin to rebuild the environment to restore what has been lost.
-The replanting should result in more shelter for more species, which can pull organisms right out of the endangered lists
