Manatiee
The Florida Manatee is an endangered species that lives in the estuaries of Florida. These marine mammals average 10 feet in length and weigh approximately 1,200 pounds. Once plentiful, the manatee population has dwindled due to hunting, habitat alteration, and other natural and man-caused influences. Today, there only approximately 2,500 manatees living in Florida waters. Since these mammals are slow swimmers the main danger is boat collisions. To prevent this in areas where Manatees live boats are required to move at slow speeds.
